New in search: Google now suggests when malls will be crowded

We have all come to know Google as some sort of wizard. Which isn’t a very far concept from us Nigerians, lol. We understand the whole witchy thing.

But this isn’t the same. While searching for the address to Palms Shopping Mall in Lagos today, I noticed something extra in Google’s knowledge graph panel. And while it was released before now, I only just saw it, and I look at that panel a lot. In today’s search, Google told me the mall wasn’t going to be crowded.

Here’s what the search result looked like.

Google popular times

As suggested by a Google Plus post, the feature was rolled out last year. However, we all know it takes some time for new releases to get to Nigeria.

Here’s the official comment from the Google Plus post announcing the launch

Do you ever find yourself trying to avoid long lines or wondering when is the best time to go grocery shopping, pick up coffee or hit the gym (hint: avoid Monday after work)? You’re in luck!

Now, you can avoid the wait and see the busiest times of the week at millions of places and businesses around the world directly from Google Search. For example, just search for “Blue Bottle Williamsburg”, tap on the title and see how busy it gets throughout the day. Enjoy your extra time!

So what does this mean for businesses

Since this data is collected in the same way that traffic stats are picked up, we can consider it fairly legit. Which means that businesses in these malls can use it to know when they’d get the most foot traffic. Businesses also looking to open up shops in these areas will find that to be valuable.
